Mini Gastric Bypass

Obesity can lead to serious health issues, such as high cholesterol and heart disease, affecting your overall health and quality of life.

A mini gastric bypass is a procedure that changes how much you can eat and how many calories you absorb.

Vision Bariatrics in Tijuana, Mexico, offers mini gastric bypass for just $4,999. We combine affordability with impeccable health and safety standards.

Improve Your Quality of Life with a Shorter, Less Invasive Procedure than Gastric Bypass

You may not need traditional gastric bypass surgery to reap the benefits. A mini gastric bypass is a simpler, less invasive bariatric procedure that can still help you reach your weight loss goals. Mini gastric bypass surgery can offer:

Long-Lasting Weight Loss

This surgery reduces the size of your stomach by approximately 90 percent and bypasses up to seven feet of your intestines. This dramatically limits how much you can eat and means your body will absorb fewer calories.

Improved Health Issues

The procedure can result in type 2 diabetes remission. It can also improve diseases such as high cholesterol, hypertension, and other metabolic issues.

A Shorter and Safer Surgery

While a gastric bypass takes about four hours, a mini gastric bypass can be completed in about one hour. It also has a lower risk of complications (just 2.9 percent compared to 7 percent) compared to traditional bypasses.

Elevated Confidence & Energy

Obesity can make you feel self-conscious and prevent you from participating in an active lifestyle. Surgery and the long-term weight loss it provides can improve your vitality and boost your self-confidence.

How a Mini Gastric Bypass Works

Before and after mini gastric bypass where a new stomach is created and connected to the jejunum. The bypassed portion of the stomach has digestive juice flowing to the jejunum while the new stomach has food flowing to the jejunum.

A Two-Step Surgery  At Our Tijuana, Mexico, Facility

Step 1

The first step of this bariatric surgery is to reduce the capacity of the stomach by about 75 percent using a laparoscopic stapler. Afterward, the stomach will resemble a thin tube. As the stomach pouch adjusts after surgery, it will only be able to hold four to eight ounces, making step one the restrictive part of this bariatric procedure.

Step 2

The next step is to attach the new stomach to the lower section of the small intestines while bypassing the upper portion. This causes food to flow from the smaller stomach and bypass a significant portion of the intestines before resuming the normal digestive process, making step two the malabsorptive part of this procedure.

How You Can Lose Weight

With a Mini Gastric Bypass

Patients achieve long-term weight loss with this bypass procedure because of three very important changes it creates:

  • Reducing Food Intake

Your smaller stomach will feel full more quickly, encouraging you to eat less.
  • Reducing Calories

Your body absorbs fewer calories after this bariatric surgery because food bypasses a significant portion of the small intestine during digestion.
  • Reducing Hunger

After modifying your digestive system, signals communicating hunger to your brain will be reduced, helping your weight loss.

Of course, it takes more than surgical modifications to help patients achieve and maintain a healthy weight after a mini gastric bypass procedure. Our staff will also create a personalized and comprehensive nutrition plan to help you lose weight safely after your gastric bypass. Meanwhile, we will provide guidance to help you remain committed to a healthy diet and lifestyle in order to complement your reduced caloric intake.

Candidacy For Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery

Our team will perform various medical history evaluations to determine whether you are a good candidate for mini gastric bypass. Some of the most important criteria include:

Body Mass Index

In order to qualify for mini gastric bypass surgery, you should have a body mass index (BMI) over 40 without comorbidities or over 35 with comorbidities.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, may not be good candidates for this surgery because it increases your risk of bile reflux. If you suffer from GERD, you may be a better candidate for traditional gastric bypass surgery

Healthy Lifestyle

Smoking and heavy alcohol use can increase your risk of complications and heart disease, so you should be committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle prior to surgery and throughout your recovery.

What Is My BMI?

Let's Find the Solution to Your Weight Loss Needs

Just as our bodies vary, so do our surgical needs. The best procedure for one patient may not suit the next, which is why your bariatric surgeon will take plenty of time to analyze your health, your weight loss needs, and your personal goals.

Your safety and satisfaction are our focus. If after a thorough consultation, your bariatric surgeon determines a mini gastric bypass is not right for you, we can recommend a traditional gastric bypass or other bariatric surgery to help you start a new era of excellent physical health in your life. Request a consultation online or call us today to find out which bariatric procedure is best for you.

A Typical Recovery Timeline For Your Weight Loss Surgery

1-3 Months

You will transition from a special liquid protein diet to a regular healthy diet.

Mini Gastric Bypass as a Revision Surgery

Mini gastric bypass is a popular option for patients considering revision surgery after gastric sleeve surgery, LAP-Band, or gastric balloon. Similarly, those who previously underwent mini bypass surgery can often undergo a duodenal switch or traditional gastric bypass. Because of our outstanding results in this area, about 50 percent of the procedures our Tijuana practice performs are revisions.

Other Bariatric Surgery Options Available at Our Tijuana, Mexico, Facility

If you're not a candidate for mini gastric bypass surgery, other bariatric surgeries can help you reach your weight loss goals.

Roux-en-Y/Traditional Gastric Bypass

Widely known as a traditional gastric bypass, Roux-en-Y is a procedure where the stomach is divided into a lower and upper pouch. The procedure is similar to a mini gastric bypass except it involves more intestinal rerouting and has a longer overall surgery time. Some people choose a mini gastric bypass instead of a Roux-en-Y procedure because it's a simpler weight loss surgery and less likely to involve complications. However, if you find you don't qualify for mini gastric bypass surgery, Roux-en-Y can often be a safe and effective alternative when performed by our skilled bariatric surgeons.

Gastric Sleeve

Both mini and traditional gastric bypass surgery are considered restrictive and malabsorptive procedures. The gastric sleeve, however, is just restrictive. In a gastric sleeve procedure, part of the stomach is removed to reduce your caloric intake. Like a mini gastric bypass, a gastric sleeve limits how much you can eat. Our surgeon removes the stomach tissue using laparoscopic techniques. Next, using a surgical stapler, he will create a stomach "sleeve" similar to the size and shape of a banana. The remaining gastric sleeve will only be about 10 percent of the size of your natural stomach. While this procedure does not bypass your intestines, it is still highly effective at promoting significant weight loss and is a popular procedure amongst our patients.

Mini vs. Traditional Gastric Bypass What's the Difference Between the Procedures?

Mini and traditional gastric bypass are similar in that they both shrink the stomach and bypass a portion of the small intestines. However, there are two key differences in these bariatric procedures.

Size of the New Stomach

Gastric bypass reduces the stomach to about the size of a walnut, so it can hold around one ounce of food and/or liquids. The stomach after a mini gastric bypass can typically hold between four and eight.

Connections to the Small Intestines

During a gastric bypass, two new connections to the small intestine are made. One from the new stomach to the small intestine and another from the upper small intestine to the lower portion of the small intestine. In a mini gastric bypass, the new stomach is attached directly to the lower portion of the small intestine, creating only one new connection. For this reason, mini gastric bypass is considered a simpler surgery than a gastric bypass, with fewer risks.

Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery FAQ

Patient education is a cornerstone of our Tijuana office, and we want you to make an informed decision when it comes to mini gastric bypass surgery, gastric bypass, or any other bariatric procedure. To help you prepare for your one-on-one consultation with a surgeon, here are some answers to frequently asked questions about mini gastric bypass surgery:

How long does mini gastric bypass surgery take?

The procedure can usually be performed in under an hour. Gastric bypass performed using the traditional method can take as long as four hours.

Does this type of gastric bypass cause weight loss by restricting how much I can eat?

Yes, but it also induces rapid weight loss by bypassing part of the small intestine so that fewer calories are absorbed. A traditionally performed gastric bypass works the same way, but bypasses a greater portion of the small intestine.

How soon will I achieve weight loss after surgery?

This variation on gastric bypass surgery can allow you to lose 60% to 70% of your excess weight within about two years. This will require a special diet and regular physical activity.

"I wish I had done this years earlier."

"I decided to go down based on the recommendation of a friend. I had a great, smooth experience. I flew down and checked in on a Thursday afternoon, had surgery around noon on Friday, recovered on Saturday, and came home to the US Sunday morning. I was back at work on Monday. I think my experience is probably a-typical, but I'm down about 30 pounds in the three weeks since my surgery. I eat very little each day, and always feel full. I'm only 41, but I still wish I had done this years earlier. Highly recommend Vision Bariatrics. Great experience, and the price certainly can't be beat." Richard Mellor, 2023
